Obedient to What?

The answers to yesterday's post, Under Law or Grace?, were not too surprising. As expected, couple of commenters touched on the question I am asking today.

We know that we are no longer under law, if indeed we are under grace. At the same time, we should agree that anyone who has become a new creature in Christ is obedient (Lordless Salvation heretics may go argue with Frank Turk. I'm not interested.) So this is my question:

Obedient to what, and why? If I told my kids that I expected their obedience, but they should consider themselves free from my commands, they would be confused.

Maybe I sound confused. I told a commenter yesterday that my question wasn't intended to lead you down any particular road, and that is true. These are completely open questions; but I am going somewhere with this, and as soon as I nail down where that is, I'll let you know. I've been having some thoughts on this that are new, at least to me, and I'm trying to figure out if they are profound, or just stupid.

We are subject to the Law of Christ.
1 Corinthians 9:19-21 and Galatians 5-6.

Children are to be obedient to their parents in all things, for this is pleasing to the Lord.- Col. 3:20

We are to be obedient to the governing authorities - Titus 3:1

We are to obey Jesus Christ - 1 Pet. 1:2

We are to be obedient to that which sums up all the Law and the Prophets: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind...and love your neighbor as yourself.

QUESTION: Obedient to what, and why?
ANSWER: We are to be obedient to the imperatives of the NT. That obedience should flow from a heart of gratitude for what Christ has done for us, in redeeming us from the curse of the Law, by becoming a curse for us. Our obedience should NOT flow from a spirit of fear, but of gratefulness.

Very appropriate post in light of Rose's current post.

I was right, you would really like The Marrow of Modern Divinity by Edward Fisher (at least we think that is who wrote it). It broaches the question you've leveled above. The simple answer is that we are, as believers under grace, to be obedient to the Ten Commandments as a summary of the moral law of God, forever binding on his creatures. Hmmm, you say, aren't we freed from the law? What is the difference between obeying the law under the law and obeying the law under grace? I'll quote from the Marrow: "Both of these laws agree in saying, Do This. But here is the difference; the one saith Do this, and live. and the other saith, Live, and do this; the one saith, Do this, for life,; the other saith, do this from life: the one saith, 'If thou do it not, thou shalt die;' the other saith , 'If thou do it not, I will chastise thee with the rod.'" The illustration with your children is good. Should they obey you to become/remain your children or should they obey you because they are your children? The question is not what commands they obey, the commands are the same. The question is what is the status of your relationship that motivates their obedience. Consequently, do you punish their disobedience to exact payment? Or, do you discipline their disobedience that they might grow in grace? Both situations have the same breach of your commands, but the two responses differ based on your children's relationship to you. Excuse the length of my response. I look forward to your thoughts on the issue.

Wow! David, your question is obviously intended to elicit the responses you have received thus far. They certainly have been interesting.

Joe Holland, which Edward Fisher are you referring to?

The Edward Fisher that the 1818 edition of the Marrow attributes as author. See more here.

We are subject to the Law of Christ expressed in the Ten Commandments not as slaves but as sons! ... Joe Holland is right on!

"But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed" - Romans 6:17 (esv)

They are obeying (surrendering to) the Spirit of Life that came into them the moment they were born from above.
