Hymns of My Youth: Rock of Ages

Possibly Toplady’s best, humbly acknowledging absolute helplessness and dependence on Christ:

284 Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save me from its guilt and pow’r.

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hands I bring,
Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress,
Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

The Concordia Hymnal (Augsburg Publishing House), 1960.

David, this too is one of my favorite hymns. I rather enjoy Chris Rice's version as well.

What is your favorite hymn?

I like this hynm as well. What makes it good is the solid and rich theological content it has. I don't know for sure if I have a "favorite hynm" -- maybe a "favorite 100 hymns". Bill
