On the last ballot—yes, the infamous ballot that re-elected the worst American President ever (including Jimmy Carter)—there was a referendum to ban smoking in public places in the state of North Dakota. To my great disappointment, it passed, not that I had any personal interest in the outcome. I don’t smoke cigarettes, and believe that the vast majority who do, do so sinfully. But there is a more important principle—legally speaking—at stake that caused me to vote against the anti-smoking referendum: private property rights.
