The Bunny Made Me Do It

I have just spent about a week mostly away from the internet. During that time, I read no blogs, and completely ignored the news. During that time, there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas, and Hugh Hefner died. As horrific as the first is, it’s the second that caught more of my attention.

imageHugh Hefner introduced me to naked women. I was about twelve or thirteen years old. In those days, a kid had to make an effort to access porn. With any “luck,” he had a father or older brother with a stash of magazines, or a friend with such a father or brother. Failing that, he might resort to shoplifting magazines from the drugstore, provided they weren’t kept behind the counter. In my case, it was a friend who discovered a stack of unsold Playboy magazines, sans covers,* in the trash behind the drugstore.

Thank you, Hugh Hefner. Thank you, Mr Drugstore Owner. Thank you . . . Well, if I’m to be honest, and put the blame where it belongs, thanks to me and my own sinful desires.

But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. —James 1:14–15

It’s easy to blame the publishers and sellers of porn—or the immodestly-dressed woman—for sinful thoughts, but God allows no such excuse. Hefner did what he did, and, lacking repentance and faith in Christ, he is paying for it now. I must take responsibility for my own sin, and turn to Christ in faith, or join him there.

Postscript: If you are tempted by porn, I highly recommend Sexual Detox: A Guide for Guys who are Sick of Porn by Tim Challies (my review).

* When magazines and paperback books are not sold, their covers are removed and returned to the publisher, and the books are destroyed. If you find and buy book like this, the author and publisher receive no compensation, and you become an accomplice to theft. Stripped Book
