Lord’s Day 48, 2017

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

image

All Judah rejoiced concerning the oath, for they had sworn with their whole heart and had sought Him earnestly, and He let them find Him. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.

—2 Chronicles 15:15

XXIII. Rejoicing in our covenant-engagements to God. 2 Chron. xv. 15.
Philip Doddridge (1702–1751)

image

O happy day, that fix’d my choice
On thee, my Saviour, and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
And tell its raptures all abroad.

O happy bond, that seals my vows
To him who merits all my love!
Let chearful anthems fill his house,
While to that sacred shrine I move.

’Tis done; the great transaction’s done:
I am my Lord’s, and he is mine:
He drew me, and I follow’d on,
Charm’d to confess the voice divine.

Now rest my long divided heart,
Fix’d on this blissful centre, rest;
With Ashes who would grudge to part
When call’d on angels bread to feast?

High heav’n, that heard the solemn vow,
That vow renew’d shall daily hear;
Till in life’s latest hour I bow,
And bless in death a bond so dear.

—Philip Doddridge, Hymns Founded on Various Texts in the Holy Scriptures (Salop, 1755).

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Please don’t miss worshiping with your local congregation
if you can possibly help it.
But if you’re in need of a good sermon, try these.
